South Dallas "Top of the Class" Community Tutoring Center

Many of the students in the South Dallas community lack good study skills, access to computers, and the availability of help with their homework from their parents/caregivers. The South Dallas "Top of the Class" Community Tutoring Center opened in 2005 to address such issues.

The tutoring center provides free, one-on-one tutoring services to students in grades 1 through 12 in math, language arts, reading, science, and social studies. Students are accepted from all of the neighboring schools in the community.

The goal of the program is to raise both academic expectations and achievements. Students are tutored in the various subject areas as well as in computer skills and test-taking skills. All students have access to our computers and the Internet to complete their weekly assignments.  They also have access to our sizeable lending library. The teachers working with the students are all certified.

During the 2009 school year, the tutoring center provided practice in test-taking skills for TAKS (the Texas Assessment of Knowledge Skills) and various other tests. All students who took the Reading and Math TAKS passed at a rate of 97 percent in reading and math. All students who took the Writing TAKS passed at a rate of 100 percent. In addition, the tutoring center maintained a promotion rate of 100 percent.
